STHALAPURANAM Many centuries ago there lived three Asuras –Thanjagan, Thandakan, Gajamukan who had obtained boon of immortality from Lord Siva and were uncontrollably behaving. One sage by name Paraasara was doing penance here taking the water from a clear water spring nearby. The three Asuras came to this place quite often and disturbed the sage’s penance by drinking the holy water of the spring. The sage prayed to Lord Hari to save him and his holy companions and Lord took pity on the sages and killed Thanjagan by his Chakrayudha-the Divine Wheel-which is a Protector to Good and Weapon to Evil. Lord also fulfilled the last desire of Thanjagan that the place should be named after him and hence this place is Thnjavur.Narasimhar in the form of YALI also annihilated Gajamukan and hence the name Thanjaiyalinagar. As Thandagan was also ultimately killed here this place is also known as Thandakaranyam. It is also believed the Garuda-the holy vehicle of Lord Narayana is guarding this holy place .This holy place is also called Paraasara Kshetram, Vambulancholai, Azhagapuri and Garudapuri, Thirumangai Azhvar glorifies this place by naming the Lord here as EMPIRAAN and he found that the name Narayana as the only succor for his retrieval
